With effect from 1 April 2019, the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) has been restructured to form the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) under National Parks Board (NParks).

SFA

All food-related services under AVA will be provided by the new Singapore Food Agency (SFA). SFA will serve as the single point of contact for public feedback on food-related issues, and strengthen management of foodborne disease outbreaks to protect public health.

SFA will also facilitate more business-friendly regulations with oversight of all food safety policies and consolidation of food laboratory capabilities to deepen competencies in food diagnostics, and research and development in food safety.

Singapore’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Resources said that the SFA will strengthen food safety and security by enhancing regulatory oversight along the entire food supply chain, and streamline processes for food safety. By consolidating resources, SFA will be able to employ a more targeted approach towards food safety issues.

Furthermore, the ministry said that the SFA has set an ambitious goal to meet 30% of Singapore’s nutritional needs by 2030. This represents a multi-fold increase to the current production, and will require Singapore’s agri-food industry to transform into one that is highly productive and employs climate-resilient and sustainable technologies that will enable it to overcome the land, water, energy and manpower constraints. SFA will therefore work hand-in-hand with the industry and consumers to achieve this ambitious target, and co-create the Singapore Food Story

AVS

On the other hand, all non-food related animal, plant and wildlife management services will be provided by National Parks Board (NParks) / Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS). AVS will be the main contact-point on animal health and animal-related issues for pet owners and businesses, as well as animal welfare groups. Separately, NParks will be the main contact-point on plant health, CITES and wildlife management services.
